  1. In the social sciences, the part(s) a person
  2. plays in society, either in helping the
  3. social system to work or in fulfilling social
  4. responsibilities towards others. Role play
  5. refers to the way children learn adult roles
  6. by acting them out in play (mothers and
  7. fathers, cops and robbers). Everyone has a
  8. number of roles to play in a society: for
  9. example, a woman may be an employee, mother,
  10. and wife at the same time. Sociologists
  11. distinguish between formal roles, such as
  12. those of a doctor or politician, and informal
  13. roles, such as those of mother or husband,
  14. which are based on personal relationships.
  15. Social roles involve mutual expectations: a
  16. doctor can fulfil that role only if the
  17. patients play their part; a father requires
  18. the support of his children. They also
  19. distinguish between ascribed roles (those we
  20. are born with) and achieved roles (those we
  21. attain). Role conflict arises where two or
  22. more of a person's roles are seen as
  23. incompatible. Role conflict arises where two
